The Science

Often when the term “Christian Science” is mentioned the first question that pops to mind is “Is that Scientology?” The quick and easy answer, and the one I’m most comfortably giving is “No, they are not even related.”

The second question that comes is this: “What does science have to do with Christianity?” This answer is more involved, but it’s certainly a legitimate question!

In general, science is defined as a systemized knowledge of something, like mathematics, physics, etc. It is something that can be demonstrated, proven. It is based on laws that have been observed, implemented, and have an expected result. Christianity on the other hand is the practice of Christ Jesus teachings. But, what many don’t realize is that it was his implementation of God’s laws that he practiced. As he implemented these laws, today found and taught in scripture, he proved they, too, are systematic. In short, they are scientific. So, when Mrs. Eddy joined the two words science and Christianity she was acknowledging that Christianity is a science as shown by Jesus’ healings, that true science is Christian, and that the teachings and methods of Christ Jesus are not only demonstrable, but that they are provable today, as well, because a science always remains a science.

Mrs. Eddy writes, “The two largest words in the vocabulary of thought are “Christian” and “Science.” The former is the highest style of man; the latter reveals and interprets God and man; it aggregates, amplifies, unfolds, and expresses the ALL-God. The life of Christ is the predicate and postulate of all that I teach, and there is but one standard statement, one rule, and one Principle for all scientific truth”
(No and Yes, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 10:6).

To further understand this Science of Christianity, or Christian Science, you’ll want to study the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mrs. Eddy, in conjunction with each other. One way to do this is by studying the Christian Science Bible Lesson.
