Is your Christianity lukewarm?

Is your Christianity lukewarm?

In the book Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, Eric Metaxas writes, "Wilberforce expalinied that real Christianity had evaporated from England prinicipally because it was woven into the social fabric and therefore was easier to ignore and take for granted. 'Christianity especially,' he wrote, 'has always thrived under persecution. For then it has no lukewarrn professors.' Wilberforce was exctly right. Not only was there no persecution of Christiaity in England at that time, but the entire nation was officially Christian -- in name only, according to Metaxas. England's pulpits were filled with just such 'lukewarm professors' lukewarmly professing a lukewarm faith that thrilled no one and challenged none, lacking, as it did, the indispensable tang to otherness that is at the heart of Christian belief" (pg 170).

What is at the heart of Christianity? So many have left Christiaity behind stating that it has lost its applicability to the world. It has merely stated, "Peace, peace, when there is no peace" (Jer 6:14). But, what about true Christianity? The Christianity that fills the heart with the presence of the healing Christ? The Christianity that fills the soul with an awareness of God's great care for us? The Christianity that calms the storm, hushes all fear, and silences all doubt? Is this true sense of Christiaity lukewarm, vacant, unneeded in today's world?

Never.

More than ever, a truer sense of Christianity, as given to each of us through the words and works of Christ Jesus is needed. In fact, even more, it is sought after and found to the hearts of those who inwardly sense that it is present, needed, and operative.

It is found in God, divine Love.

This higher sense of Love, God, is expressed in a higher sense of Christianity. Understanding God as Love, compassionate, caring, healing, powerful, enables us to plant our spiritual understanding on the firm foundation of God's actual presence. Christianity, after all, is simply the followership of Christ Jesus, who did all that he did through his clear spiritual understanding of his relationship with God, his Father, good.

Our relationship to God is also one of Father and child, Mother and child. And this unity of oneness with God, divine Love, is seen and felt in the hearts and souls of those who are seeking and finding this union.

Mrs. Eddy writes, "Christianity is Christlike only as it reiterates the word, repeats the works, and manifests the spirit of Christ". (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 25:19)

This season, as Christians aflame with the light of Christ, Truth, -- and as those seeking a higher more practical sense of Christianity -- let's pray to let in the light of the Word of God. Let's repeat the works of Christ Jesus in love and healing. And, let's manifest the spirit of Christ! For, true Christianity has never been and never will be "lukewarm" within the hearts and souls of those who know their redeemer!
